Ilona Szabó de Carvalho
Ilona Szabó de Carvalho, consultant, joined Synergos in 2008. She holds a Masters Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Uppsala in Sweden, is a Specialist in International Development Studies and has also studied international relations.
Since January 2008, she has been a member of the secretariat of the Latin American Commission on Drugs and Democracy, a joint initiative of four organizations -- The Democratic Platform, Center Edelstein, The Fernando Henrique Cardoso Institute and Viva Rio.
Before joining Synergos, she coordinated the Human Security Program of Viva Rio, which aim at reducing armed violence thorough proposals that link security to development issues. Some of her extensive writing on these issues are available at www.comunidadsegura.org
Ilona is part of the Democratic Platform network called Young Leaders, through which young leaders of different sectors of society are encouraged to participate in the public debate of issues related to the strengthening of democracy in Latin America. She is also a member of the board of the Youth Program of the Open Society Institute and of a Brazilian nonprofit organization called Instituto Realice, which focuses on income generation.
