Tourism can be a powerful force for development if organized in ways that engage and empower local people. In this issue we learn about ways in which philanthropists can promote tourism for development in Africa, with perspectives from the work of Eddie Bergman, Anders and Agneta Johansson, and Greg Carr. Working with local leaders, cooperating with government, and recognizing different strengths of for-profit and nonprofit approaches are themes running through these efforts.

Feature Winter 2012-2013 Vincent Mai: Restoring the Environment in South Africa’s Eastern Cape
The Karoo region in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa is one of Vincent Mai’s favorite places in the world. Mai, who was born in Karoo, has worked in London and New York, and his philanthropic efforts have spanned the globe. But, says Mai, “I’ve always had a hankering as part of my philanthropy to do something in the place of my roots.” After meeting Andrew Muir, a world-famous environmentalist who runs the Wilderness Foundation in South Africa, Mai began to look for a conservation project in Karoo. It took several years, but the Vincent Mai family eventually purchased three large farms on 20,000 acres in the Camdeboo plains that were in desperate need of restoration.

Joshua Mailman is a leader in impact investing, which he describes as “private investment in for-profit companies that have deep social and environmental missions connected to them.” For more than 30 years, Mailman has applied his own resources to impact social issues around the world and helped build an ecosystem of organizations that enables individuals from all degrees of wealth to use their resources more effectively.
